The 1997 model 5 series E39 was introduced into the US market in 1996. Models available were the 528i and the 540i with the M62 V8 engines.
In 1998 rear side airbags became available, and both models were fitted with curtain air bags BMW’s Head Protection System. A new Sport Package for the 528i and 540i, as well as an auto transmission for 540i were added. In 1998 the 540i M62B44 engine was updated to the M62TUB44 engine. The high-performance M5 was returned to the stables. The M5 used a 400 Hp or 300 kW V8 S62 engine and a 6-speed manual gearbox.
1999 the Touring was introduced joining the saloons in both straight-6 and V8 cylinder engines. Standard on V8 models and 528i's was Dynamic Stability Control. The M52 2.8 liter straight-6 engines were now all aluminium cylinder blocks and heads with the introduction of double VANOS. The 4.4 liter V8 engines were fitted with electronic throttle control.
In 2000 rain-sensing windshield wipers and xenon headlamps became standard on the 540i, and were newly available for 528i models. The "M Sport" package was added, replacing the standard sport package which also included the M Sport steering wheel. The 528i versions also gained the 540i's standard stability control system.
In 2001 BMW updated the E39 with new LED taillight lenses, side markers, and ‘angel eye’ headlights. The 528i was replaced by the 530i which had a new 170 kW or 228 Hp M54B30 inline-6 cylinder 3.0 litre engine. The new 525i was introduced featuring a 143 kW or 192 Hp M54B25 which was a 2.5 litre staright-6 engine. The front grille was also changed.
2002, BMW steptronic E39’s had their manual shift direction changed over to BMW's SMG shifter and the 540i V8 32V engine power was increased from 210 kW or 282 Hp to 216 kW and 290 Hp.
2003 marked the last year for the BMW E39’s reign. All 6-cylinder model 5-Series added a standard sunroof. The optional sport package on the 540i carried parts from M-technic. This included a full M-tech ground effects, M-tech II suspension, 18 inch wheels, and a variety of M badges.
