The BMW E34 is BMW’s 5-Series automobile which was designed and manufactured at Dingolfing, Germany from 1988 to 1995 with the BMW Touring model that was produced up until the middle of the year 1996. It replaced the BMW E28 and was replaced by the BMW E39.
The E34 succeeded the BMW E28 in 1988 with two models for the American markets. The 525i used the BMW M20 engine while the 535i used the larger more robust M30 motor. The 540's were also the bench mark of the V8 era. The cars were a mixture of traditional and the very latest in BMW’s modern technological line-up that customers around the world had come to expect from the BMW brand of cars.
BMW's traditional front engine and rear wheel drive layout and straight-6 cylinder engine were used, providing a smooth engine and balanced weight distribution of the car. The all new 5-series had a much stiffer body and was more streamlined than its predecessors.
The BMW E34, due to the E28 success, was amongst the most reliable luxury cars on the market at the time which were responsible for earning it the ‘best-in-class’ ratings from Intellichoice and still considered one of the most reliable and best BMWs ever constructed. The E34 was also one of the safest cars of its time due to crash-airbags and anti-lock brakes that were fitted during its production to protect driver and passengers including an extremely rigid body shell structure which enhanced road handling with reduced body flex. The cars were also equipped with automatic stability control or traction control in later years.
Europe was given a larger selection of engine choices and combinations than most countries around the globe, the North America market was more limited receiving only the 525i, 525i Touring, 535i, 530i, 530i Touring, 540i, and the M5. The European market also got the E34 518i, 520i, 6-cylinder 530i, diesel 525td/s, 525iX, M5 touring and 540i Touring cars for their market place.
The range of different models was distinguished in the same fashion as BMW E32 7-seriesrange of cars, differentiated by the front grille. The V8 models and 520/525 after 1994 for the 1995 model year were equipped with the wide grille while the other cars were fitted with narrow "kidney grilles".
